About the Artist

Barry is a nationally recognized, award-winning illustrator, who is presently a contributing illustrator to Flying Magazine, Flight Journal, and Aviation International News. In Flying Magazine he has illustrated the “I Learned About Flying From That” column for the last 25 years. His sports illustrations have appeared in Sports Illustrated, Outdoor Life, and Running Times. For over 20 years he has been the illustrator of Golf Magazine’s famous instructional series, “Private Lessons”.

In additional to his love of aviation and sports, his interest in the interpretation of technology through illustration led to many corporate commissions by clients including Exxon, Mobil Oil, Martin Marrietta, and Bendix Aerospace.

Born and raised in New York City, he attended the prestigious High School of Music and Art, and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with a BFA in Graphic Arts and Illustration. As a New York based illustrator he became a member of the Society of Illustrators, and participated in a number of it’s Air Force Art Program trips.

Aviation has always been a prime force in his life. One of his earliest memories is of being taken by his father to the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport, and looking through the chain link fence at the departure end of the runway as a squadron of Flying Fortresses took off for Europe. The sights and sounds of that moment was the beginning of his love of airplanes and flying.

As a teenager his bedroom/art studio was a mixture of art books, paints and brushes, and photos and models of airplanes. His first actual flight took place at the age of 18, in a Piper Tri-pacer, at New York City’s Flushing Airport. A couple of years later, he began flying lessons in an Aeronca Champ at Ramapo Valley Airport in Spring Valley, NY. He subsequently transitioned through Piper’s Colt and Tri-pacer, the Cessna 150, 172, and the Piper Cherokee.

His love of the planes of his early years has culminated in his present aviation project: paintings of classic aircraft from 1930 through 1960. They will be part of an ongoing series being published by Flying Magazine.

Barry presently lives in Fairfield, IA, with his wife, Kate, and flies a Citabria.
